FAQ:
Biological Safety Cabinets Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC's)
29. I'm trying to evaluate which would be most appropriate for my laboratory, a Baker SterilGARD or a BioGARD biological safety cabinet. Can you summarize just what are the differences between them?
First, lets talk about what they have in common. Both are Class II, Type A1 cabinets. You'll recall these are defined as cabinets with a minimum intake air velocity of 75 FPM, which recirculate approximately 70% of the HEPA filtered air through the cabinet, and exhaust approximately 30% to the room via an exhaust HEPA filter.
Now, to summarize the differences: First, the BioGARD cabinet at 79 3/8" has a lower profile than the SterilGARD (87 5/8"). The SterilGARD also features a sliding view screen with alarm, a zoned downflow, and all positive pressure plenums are surrounded by negative pressure. When equipped with a ducted exhaust, the SterilGARD becomes a Class A2 cabinet. The point is, you have a choice of design concepts when you buy a Class II Type A cabinet from Baker. - Updated: July 26, 2002
